Decker,
I’m going to let you in on a little secret: Jobs suck. You don’t want one. In the immortal words of Marlon Wayans, “A job ain’t nothin but work.” (If you haven’t seen Mo’ Money, see it.)
But here’s the thing…
- You have to be able to financially support yourself in adulthood.
- If applicable, you have to be able to financially support others.
So how does that work?
That’s the part you have to figure out. Don’t worry. I’ll help a lot and, depending on when you’re reading this, you have tons of time. But that’s the ticket. Figure out something you can do everyday to contribute to other people, such that you get paid for it. That’s our capitalist society at work. For the forseeable future, learning how to make machines do what you want them to do will be an automatic source of a living. I’ve said this before.
Albert Einstein talked to his son about this point. He said, “That is the way to learn the most, that when you are doing something with such enjoyment that you don’t notice that the time passes.” You can read more here. Find something you would do all day long for no money – something that benefits others – and you will find something that can help you make a living.
You also have to do your best to be happy, too. Because if you’re happy, you can keep going. If you aren’t happy, it becomes hard to envision doing the same thing over and over.
I’m here to help. So is Mom. So is most of the rest of the world.
Love,
Dad
