Business Idea #176 – The Complete Budget App

by Byron on September 11, 2012

The Problem:

Budgeting is hard.  Hard to the point that most people do not or cannot do it.  There are so many different expenses and many unknowns.

The Business

An application that handles budgeting in a specific and proprietary way.

Built into the app is a full budget based on just money coming in.  The user enters revenue, aka salary or monies received.  The application instantly spits out a budget.  Then the user begins to customize for their own life.  Each edit the user makes adjusts all other entries.  Once the user is done editing, there is a final and complete budget.

Doableness

There are a lot of if/then statements, but what good project doesn’t have a lot of if/then statements.  Done correctly, like most things, it can spread virally.  The marketing is the product, or the product is the marketing.

My Thoughts

This is one of my favorite ideas.  It’s a very usable, user friendly budget.  The problem with budgeting generally and, by extension, budgeting software, isn’t that it needs to be perfect.  It’s that no one does it.  No one does it because it’s hard and time consuming and easy to fit one piece, hard to finalize the puzzle.

For the first time this year, I forgot to do my post yesterday.  I was going to do it early then I was going to do it right before the Ravens game, then I was going to do it after the game.  The day just got away from me and it never got done.  It’s hard to follow commitments, but not making hard commitments isn’t the answer.  Trying to put out quality until the end of the year.  Q4 is almost here.
