Business Idea #159 – Guess Where This Picture Is

by Byron on August 15, 2012

The Problem:

We seem to have an unquenchable thirst for games – video, sports, or otherwise.  And what happened to Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

The Business

Guess Where that Picture Is

People upload pics with their location.  Other people have to guess where the pic is.

This is hours of unending fun for some.

Doableness

The basics of the idea – upload, parse, guess, winner – are easy.  The tough part is to make it continuously engaging and create a community around the game.  In addition, it needs to be just hard enough to be fun.  You can’t have pictures of Big Ben and you can’t have pictures of the sewer grate at 19th and Broadway.  The pics need to be identifiable, but not obvious.  With that in mind, you need a way of ranking the pics by difficulty, and sorting the pics by geography.  You also need scale.  Lots of pics.

My Thoughts

As a consumer, I would love to consume this.  As a builder, I wouldn’t use the word love.  There is a distinct chance that you build it and it never gains any traction.

Traction.  Interesting word.  Interesting Concept.  Why do many great ideas go nowhere while Quora is worth a billion?  Well, customers.  Audience.  But it’s more complicated than that.  I think pedigree is becoming more and more important.  The chances of making it to the major leagues are X.  What are the chances of making it to the major leagues if your father played in the majors?  10X?

This is no excuse for not succeeding.  It just needs to make you think, How do I get a father who played in the majors?

Shout out to Brandon Mead for the picture of?
