The Problem:
Many professionals still think it’s 1985- a simpler time when you could hold yourself out as a generalist. (Even specialists need to get more specialized.)
The Business
It could be marketing services, practice consulting, or even coaching. The point is, specializing is the only way of the future.
Specializing is giving up the opportunity to learn other things in order to learn more about one thing.
It applies to lawyers, accountants, financial advisors, and management consultants, to name just a few. It even applies to strategy or marketing consultants helping other professionals to specialize.
Doableness
If you know what I’m talking about better than I do, maybe you can answer this question. This is more of a trend that applies to many than a specific business. That said, it would be fairly easy to start a strategy or marketing consulting business helping others to specialize.
My Thoughts
- Once upon a time, it was okay to say you were a lawyer.
- Next it was a litigator.
- Then it was a medical malpractice lawyer.
- Then a birth injury lawyer. (This is about where it is now.)
- Next it will be a cerebral palsy only lawyer.
- Then a spastic diplegea cerebral palsy lawyer.
I think you get the point. Life is simply more complicated, more specialized, and more nuanced than ever before. It’s a trend that will continue.
