Leave All Your Love Behind

by Byron on May 6, 2013

Dear Decker,

What a good week!  You’re happy as ever.  You eat like a horse and sleep like a log.  You love your Mommy and your Daddy.  Your Aunt Heather is in town to see you again.  You saw Grandma and Grandpa last night.  You saw Mimi and Pop-Pop on Saturday night and Thursday night.  Pop-Pop just had knee replacement surgery.  He’s doing great and was thrilled to see you.  You came to see me play softball yesterday morning.  It was a beautiful day.

I was running this past week and I heard some song lyrics that made me think of you.  I was listening to Dog Days are Over by Florence + The Machine.  It says, “Leave all your love and your longing behind, you can’t carry it with you if you want to survive.”  I don’t know what Florence or her machine means by that line.  It doesn’t matter much, I guess.  I know what I think it means.  You have to give the love inside of you away all the time.  You can’t bottle it up and save it for a rainy day.  It doesn’t work like that.  You have to give it away.  Over and over again.

But where does it come from?  If you have to give it away over and over, how do you get more?  It comes from the people around you, from the world.  It’s everywhere if you know how to look.  Right now, you know how to look.  I’ll do what I can to help you remember how to look.  Trust me, it’s everywhere.  Sometimes it means you have to be around some people and not others.  Be around the people that fill you up with more.  Try to do the same for them.  That’s kind of the deal.  That’s what’s up.

I love you, Deck!

Dad
