What I’m thinking about this week

by Byron on April 26, 2013

Decker,

Hey buddy.  You were six months old this week!  You’ve been a little sick, but you’re doing well in general.  Dr. Goldstein saw you today for your six month appointment.  He said you were doing awesome!

I was thinking this week about the way we teach kids information.  In my school experience, there was a ton of memorization.  Memorization is bullshit.  Sure, you need to know some things simply for perspective.  However, don’t memorize anything just to memorize it.  You may have to do a small amount of it in school.  Don’t do it too much.  It’s not important.

I know writing this will come back to bite me a dozen years from now.  I say it anyway.

What you do need to know is how to get information.  That’s vital!  I had a business idea not long ago.  Here it is.  We should spend more time teaching kids how to get information, less making them learn things.  Who knows how this will play out in the years ahead, Decker, but I just wanted you to know how I felt.

The other thing I’m thinking about is completely unrelated.

I heard an advertisement today for ChristianMingle.com.  It’s an online dating site.  Their catch phrase is “Find God’s Match for You.”  It got me thinking how our world is all about us vs. them.  How different we all are.  Religion, politics, money, race, nationality.  It’s all about difference.

That’s fucking bullshit.

Love you buddy,

Dad
